Editing an S3 backup policy can impact the recovery time objective
Symptoms
- An S3 backup policy is configured to use SecureVault Archive.
- The policy is then edited to be configured with SecureVault Standard.
- The next incremental backup will use SecureVault Standard, but up until that change, objects remain in SecureVault Archive.
- When the customer performs a restore, they may not know what to expect in terms of RTO, because objects may originate from both tiers.
Applies to
S3 backups that are switched from SecureVault Archive to SecureVault Standard tier.
Root cause
The time it takes for an S3 backup to transition from the Archive to Standard tier will take time. During this time, S3 objects from an existing backup are in two backup tiers. These tiers have different performance profiles and expectations that could create a situation where some objects are restored faster than others. The slower object restores could inadvertently take longer than is acceptable for the customer making this change.
Resolution
This issue does not have a resolution as it circumstantial. It only happens if the customer performs the actions described in the Symptoms section of this document. This article is for awareness and understanding purposes.
